Who owns data?

I like to think I own my data. My data is any data about me or generated on a device I own (rent, lease, borrow, license, or whatever).

Not in the common commercial sense of any data I steal from anyone else belongs to me because no one can stop me.

This is a definition I would like to see enshrined in law. Along with the right to control it. Will it every be? Not in my lifetime. There are too many data theives that make their money collecting, aggregating and selling it.
